Patrick Lagon and Joseph Melillo, homosexuals who have been together since 1977, are contesting in court the refusal of the Hawaii Department of Health to grant them a marriage licence. Their position is strong, since the Hawaiian Supreme Court has given a ruling that the state must indicate strong reasons why it can show discrimination against couples of the same sex. The ruling is expected to lead to many gay couples seeking marriage. There is also a trend towards US gay couples bringing up children.
