The most heavily armed people in the world
Article Abstract:
Tribal society is important in Yemen where tribesmen are heavily armed and are helped by mountainous terrain to retain their independence. Government authority is confined to the cities and travelers are advised to stay on the main routes to avoid hijacks. Yemeni politics are linked to relations with Saudi Arabia which is richer with a smaller population, so has attracted Yemeni workers. The expulsion of workers by Saudi Arabia in 1990 led to serious economic problems for Yemen, and was linked to the attempt of south Yemen to secede.

Sanctions and heat take toll in Iraq
Article Abstract:
The sanctions imposed on Iraq by the United Nations in 1990 have led to serious economic, social and health problems. The oil-for-food programme has not been effective in ensuring that ordinary Iraqis have access to adequate food and medicines, and many children are suffering from malnutrition. The country's infrastructure is collapsing, with falling electricity output creating problems with pumping water and sewage. Conditions have been made even worse by the freak heatwave in summer 1998.

The undoing of a savage family
Article Abstract:
Saddam Hussein's family has for many years enjoyed a privileged position, being unaffected by the violence which has permeated the country. However, there has been considerable conflict within the family, and this has culminated in the recent defection of two of Saddam Hussein's sons-in-law to Jordan. This lack of family solidarity which is now emerging may well endanger Saddam Hussein's position.
