Article Abstract:
Higher education institutions in Wales have a long tradition of attracting students from outside Wales, unlike their counterparts in England and Scotland. Universities and colleges in Wales have always played a strong cultural role within their communities, and their economic role is now also being increasingly recognized. The number of students studying in Welsh is small, but this does not mean that Welsh language and culture are being ignored by the academic world. The new institutions tend to focus on vocational and technical subjects, while the more established ones generally deal with traditional subjects.

UCE fights the war of the rotas
Article Abstract:
Full-time staff at the University of Central England have expressed strong opposition to the decision by the university's administrators in summer 1997 to employ part-time staff through Education Lecturing Service, the main provider of part-time agency lecturers for further education. The full-time staff have concerns about Education Lecturing Service's administrative performance, and feel that the staff provided by the agency are of poor quality, thus increasing their own workload. The university has approved the use of this approach for a second year, but has not consulted full-time staff about this decision.

Self help for women on the way to the top
Article Abstract:
It is still very uncommon for women to be appointed vice-chancellor or principal of United Kingdom universities. There are only six women members of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals, out of a total of 113, and 20 of the 178 institutions surveyed by the Association of University Teachers have no women professors. However, senior women at UK universities are now attempting to raise their profile. Some are doing this by participating in the Room at the Top professional development programme, which clearly aims to get more women into senior jobs.
