UK: ABERDEEN FUND MANAGERS HINTS AT PURCHASES
Article Abstract:
Aberdeen Fund Managers hinted on 7 September 2000 that it may purchase Foreign & Colonial and Murray Johnstone, rival UK-based fund managers. Aberdeen's chief executive, Martin Gilbert, said that the group did not see itself as vulnerable to acquisition. Such concern stems from the fact that Aberdeen is 38.8% held by Scottish Provident, which is being acquired for GB[pound] 1.8bn by UK-based bank, Abbey National. Scottish Provident does not intend to sell the Aberdeen holding but the feeling is that it will eventually be sold.

UK: NASDAQ INVOLVED IN BID FOR LSE?
Article Abstract:
The London Stock Exchange (LSE) may be the subject of a bid from a consortium comprising Nasdaq, Deutsche Borse, EuroNext and OM Group. US-based stock market, Nasdaq, is regarded as a key player in a successful merger or bid deal involving the LSE. Executives at Sweden's OM have not commented formally on Nasdaq becoming a potential partner but the feeling is that such an arrangement would be the only way of gaining credibility for its own offer for LSE.
