Fare rise to pay for better Tube
Article Abstract:
Although fares on the London Underground have increased by over 40% in real terms since 1985, they may have to go up still further in order to pay for additional upgrading of the system. The government has put forward the concept of a public private partnership but if there is a gulf between fares income and payments to contractors, then passengers will have to pay more. The Government is eager to see investment of around GB 500mn a year more which if it came from ticket sales alone would cause fares to rise by 50%.
