UK: CAESARIAN BIRTHS RISING RAPIDLY
Article Abstract:
Fear of litigation, a lack of support for women in labour, and technological advances are cited as the main reasons behind the alarming escalation in Caesarean births in UK hospitals. A quarter of maternity units have Caesarean rates of 20% to 30% according to the 1998-99 survey by the English National Board for Nursing, Health Visiting and Midwifery. In one in 50 units, almost one in three births is a Caesarean. Two years ago the national rate was below 10%. Some obstetricians argue that more women are demanding a risk-free birth, and are unwilling to take the slightest risk. The issue is to be debated at a London conference, organised by the National Childbirth Trust.

Now every day is a bad hair day
Article Abstract:
Brenda Howe is campaigning for hairdressers to be registered in the United Kingdom where anyone can practice the trade and use potentially dangerous chemicals without training. She herself has suffered partial baldness as the result of chemicals applied by a hairdresser. UK hairdressers can register on a voluntary basis with the Hairdressers Council, but only 130,000 do so of a total of 180,000 UK hairdressers. Compulsory insurance would also help with compensation claims, according to Austin Mitchell, a politician who is backing Howe's cause.
