UK: PLANS TO CHANGE IMMIGRATION POLICY
Article Abstract:
The Immigration minister, Barbara Roche, has revealed that the Government is preparing to unveil plans to change immigration policy and make it easier for thousands of skilled workers to migrate to the UK. The plans are expected to be officially announced on 11 September 2000 and will aim to recruit workers from overseas to fill shortages in information technology, health and other specialist sectors. The plans come at a time when the UK is being criticised for falling behind other European nations in the race to recruit foreign workers. The UK is said to be falling behind countries such as Germany and Italy, which have already relaxed their immigration policy to take in greater numbers of economic migrants with specialist skills.
