UK: DEVELOPMENT OF ARTIFICIAL HAND FOR CHILDREN
Article Abstract:
After 16 years of development, the first artificial hand for children is about to go into commercial production. The hand is powered by a small battery that has to be recharged like a mobile phone. Arm muscle movements activate the battery which triggers pulses that in turn activate small motors, enabling the hand to open and close. The hand has been designed by David Gow, the director of rehabilitation engineering at the Princess Margaret Rose Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland and is to be manufactured by RSL Sleeper, with the aim of launching the hand in August 2001. The cost to the National Health Service should be less than GB[pound] 1,000 for each hand, according to Mr Gow.

Article Abstract:
People suffering from autism may have severe problems in performing many everyday tasks. However, some have remarkable talents in specific areas, such as calendrical calculation or playing music by ear. These abilities are around 10 times more common in people with autistic disorders than in normal people. New research indicates that people with these abilities are able to access brain functions that everybody uses, but which in most people never surface.
