UK: NATIONAL DATABASE TO HOLD DNA RECORDS
Article Abstract:
A national database to hold the DNA and medical history of 0.5mn adults in Britain is to be established to allow scientists to study the link between genes and illnesses. The database to be set up by the government's Medical Research Council would take voluntary donations from blood tests or cheek swabs. Ministers want the data to restricted to scientists and run by an independent body to ensure the police, insurers or private firms cannot access sensitive material. Public trust must be established to ensure its success. Scientists believe it will help to unravel the human genetic code and find drugs to cure inherited diseases.
