UK: CHANGES IN PLANNING LAWS MOOTED
Article Abstract:
Labour MPs will call for adjustments to planning laws to allow additional construction on green belt land in a report to be presented on 18 April 2000 to the UK government. The MPs claim to have backing from the Countryside Alliance and Council for the Protection of Rural England for plans which recommend radical changes to allow inexpensive housing together with economic development of rural areas. MPs say that if laws governing rural planning are not made more flexible, firms looking to expand may have to withdraw from rural areas. MPs also want greater support to be given to farmers to safeguard landscapes and increased protection covering areas of outstanding natural beauty.

UK: HOUSING SCHEMES SET FOR REJECTION?
Article Abstract:
Three projects each entailing the construction on greenfield sites of 2,500 homes will be rejected at the start of August 2000 by UK government inspector, Douglas Machin. The move could signal the end for the development in open country of completely new settlements and is based on the response of Mr Machin to new housing planning guidelines issued by the government. The schemes are situated south of Reading in Shinfield, Spencers Wood and Grazeley and there had been concern among local residents that the developments would have created an urban link to nearby Basingstoke.
