UK: IMMUNISATION LEVELS DECLINE
Article Abstract:
The UK Public Health Laboratory Service has warned that some areas of London are at risk of a measles epidemic because of declining levels of immunisation. Croydon was identified as the area facing the greatest risk with 74% of children aged two years receiving the MMR vaccination. A total of eight further London districts had levels of immunisation below 82%. It is thought that outbreaks of the disease can only be prevented if immunisation rates total 95%. Immunisation rates have declined 5% in the UK following a report linking autism and bowel disease to the MMR vaccination. Over this period, vaccination levels in London have decreased by 6%. The greatest risk has been identified as 2001, when children aged two years in 1998 missing the MMR vaccination, start school and come into contact with other children.

Burger chains breach minimum wage levels
Article Abstract:
The lower minimum wage for 18-21 year-olds is expected to be ignored by employers in the service and retail sectors in preference for the full GB 3.60 an hour. Legislation was introduced in June 1998 giving a GB 3.00 minimum wage for 18-21 year-olds and no minimum for those aged 16 and 17. However, growing evidence has materialised showing that employers are looking to give competence related pay rather than age-related. McDonalds says it intends to pay the adult rate to all fully trained staff over the age of 17, while Burger King will apply it to all fully trained staff no matter what age. The GMB general union is to reveal on 23 June 1998 that the idea of an age-related pay is being rejected by employers in the food and leisure industry relating to almost 100,000 employees.

UK: STUDY REVEALS DECLINE IN RURAL LIFE
Article Abstract:
Life in the UK's rural districts is declining, with environmental erosion, falling farm incomes, increasing homelessness and rising property crime factors cited in a Countryside Agency study released on 26 April 2000. The report showed that rural homelessness rose to 14.4% in 1996 from 11.8% in 1992, while contact crime, including assaults, increased between 1991 and 1995 by 60%. The agency's Isobel Coy said that village life had broken down, leading to growing fears over crime, with people feeling increasingly vulnerable owing to the waning sense of community. The agency is urging the government to provide minimum standards of service to rural areas.
