UK: SURVEY ON ETHNIC MINORITIES
Article Abstract:
A report by the UK Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) suggests that African, Bangladeshi, Afro-Caribbean and Pakistani groups perform badly on a consistent basis in education, further education and employment. There is a big disparity in the workplace where black men and women are three and four times more likely to be unemployed respectively than their white counterparts. However, the figures also reveal that Indian children obtain the highest school exam grades of all ethnic groups, with ethnic minorities making up 13% of higher education placements despite representing around 8% of the UK population of 19-24 year olds.

UK: MANUFACTURING PAY AWARDS HIT 20-YEAR LOW
Article Abstract:
According to a survey by the Confederation of British Industry, pay awards in the manufacturing sector are lower than they have been for 20 years. In the fourth quarter of 1999, pay settlements were around 2%, the lowest since 1980. The figures are partly attributed to manufacturers remaining firm about pay rises because of the current strength of sterling.
