UK: NEW ENGLISH WINE INITIATIVE REVEALED
Article Abstract:
The English Wine Marque has been established in an attempt to identify the best vineyards and bottles in what is regarded as a timely boost for the market. The UK Vineyards Association, English Wine Producers and Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries & Food have set up the new initiative, which will entail the industry awarding classifications on the basis of a stringent selection process. The 870 hectares of vineyards and 108 wineries now produce 1.7mn bottles of wine per year on average and the new quality standard is along the lives of the appellation controlee prevalent in France. Wines will be classed as regional or quality and the marque is seen as an indication of the wine market's belief in its capabilities.

UK: TESCO AND WAITROSE ACT OVER WINE CONCERN
Article Abstract:
The UK-based supermarket chains, Tesco and Waitrose, have removed wines produced by Kingston Estate amid claims of malpractice by the business, situated in the Riverland region of South Australia. The Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation (AWBC) is currently investigating claims by two US students that tannins were added to the wines by Kingston Estate, which also used unfermented grape juice with red wines and removed the odour of hydrogen sulphide with the addition of silver nitrate. Although public health is not at risk, Kingston Estate could be fined because adding tannins to wine is illegal.
