UK: RECORD NUMBER OF VACANCIES REPORTED
Article Abstract:
A record 330,000 job vacancies have been notified to UK job centres, with twice as many vacancies advertised via private means, according to a study of regional unemployment patterns released by the Treasury on 29 February 2000. The paper reveals that even people in deprived areas where immediate employment prospects are poor still live only a few miles away from potential employment. The report says at unemployment blackspots are virtually without exception within easy reach of places with a high number of vacancies. London has several deprived areas which are within up to two miles from areas where joblessness is particularly low. The Budget in March 2000 will include measures designed to help people in deprived areas obtain employment nearby.

EU: POSSIBLE STRENGTHENING OF STAFF JOB RIGHTS
Article Abstract:
France may use its period as European Union (EU) president to bring in measures obliging firms looking to cut jobs to consult workers beforehand. The TUC in the UK is collaborating with France's Socialist government, including Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, to ensure that the EU's Information and Consultation Directive is adhered to by the UK government. The move is the focal point of plans by Mr Jospin to make the rights of staff a key issue when the EU presidency role is assumed in July 2000. Such plans would guard against major job losses along the lines of those at Ford's Dagenham facility, expected to be revealed on 12 May 2000.
