UK: COST OF REPLACING STAFF INCREASES
Article Abstract:
According to a report published 25 October 2000 from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) revealed that the average cost to an employer of staff turnover in 1999 stood at GB[pound] 3,546 per person, an increase of 10%. The costs take into account indirect costs as well as costs related to replacing departed employees. The CIPD also revealed that 77% of companies reported difficulties recruiting staff in the first quarter of 2000 compared to 70% the previous year. Problems have been attributed to a scarcity of skilled workers.

UK: WORKERS LOSING OUT ON HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT
Article Abstract:
UK firms are adopting a broad array of tactics to obviate legislation governing the holiday entitlements of their staff, according to a new study. Certain businesses are not giving employees any paid time off work, saying they cannot afford it or wrongly stating that workers are ineligible. Current legislation allows staff four weeks' holiday with pay per year. The National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux believes that an employment rights enforcement organisation should be created to penalise firms, which violate the law.
