UK sites could suffer in Korean cutbacks as Samsung retrenches
Article Abstract:
Samsung Group is one of a number of South Korean companies likely to reduce the scale of overseas operations in response to the weakness of the Korean won against foreign currencies and the austerity measures set to be imposed by the International Monetary Fund. The company will drop 34 product lines in 1998, making savings of 1.3 trillion won, and is also to reduce the pay of its senior managers by 10%. Investment will be cut from 8.2 trillion won to 6 trillion won. Cost-cutting is likely to have an impact on Samsung's activities in the UK, where it is a large investor.
