US taxes could put Scotch on the rocks
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton has pledged to reform health care in the US and may introduce a sin tax to offset the medical and social costs caused by the consumption of alcohol. There may also be an additional tax to help towards the US budget deficit. The UK drinks firms, Grand Metropolitan, Guinness and Allied-Lyons are to fight against such duty increases, the US buying 250 million pounds sterling worth of Scotch whisky alone in 1992, 6% less than the year before. American brewers are also fighting hard, warning the administration that 1.37 million people directly or indirectly connected with the brewing industry could be badly affected.
