US brokers Lebanon peace deal
Article Abstract:
The US has succeeded in negotiating a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hizbollah forces which has killed around 200 Lebanese civilians. Negotiations also involved Syria, which will be one of the parties endorsing a monitoring group. The deal will not ban Hizbollah guerrillas from attacking Israeli troops in occupied southern Lebanon, and will in practice place more restrictions on Israel than on Hizbollah.

'This is not just a military operation. It is an attempt to smash a country.' (Israeli attack on southern Lebanon)
Article Abstract:
The recent Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon have caused great human suffering in the region. People have been forced to leave their homes, and civilians have been killed. The attacks are an attempt to defeat Lebanon altogether, possibly forcing the government to disarm the Hizbollah or to agree to a peace with Israel. Making a separate peace with Israel would leave Syria isolated.
