United and MAI agree 3bn pounds sterling defensive merger
Article Abstract:
Newspaper and exhibition company United News and Media, owned by Lord Stevens, has agreed a 3 billion pounds sterling defensive merger with media and financial services concern MAI, owned by Lord Hollick. However, observers believe that this may not be enough to discourage a bid from Carlton Communications, which is targeting MAI's two ITV franchises. The merger is the first between a newspaper and a television company since liberalisation rules were put forward by the UK government in Nov 1995.

Campaign aims to halt to bear-baiting
Article Abstract:
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is setting up a sanctuary for bears rescued from bear baiting in a project involving development and humanitarian agencies. Bear baiting is common in Pakistan, though it is illegal. The law is not strictly enforced, and the owners of the bears often do not see another way of earning a living. The project aims to tackle this problem by providing education for the owners who may be gypsies on the margin of the community.
