Unravelling Ravel
Article Abstract:
Maurice Ravel's 'Daphnis et Chloe' is a marvellous work, with great sophistication and extremely high levels of orchestration, according to conductor Andre Previn. The complete ballet works on a purely visceral level, and disproves the claim that Ravel is a miniaturist. Ravel knew exactly how to compose for the symphony orchestra, and was a key influence on many contemporary composers. The London Symphony Orchestra is to perform a Ravel series in Jun 1997, including the complete 'Mother Goose' ballet and the second 'Daphnis et Chloe' suite.

Lord and master
Article Abstract:
Yehudi Menuhin first became famous as a very young violinist, and has since had a very long and successful career. He is now almost 80 years old, but is still working on many projects and attracts great public support. He believes that he is still basically the same person as he was when he first began performing, but that he now has a much greater intellectual burden. Recent projects have included a performance of Beethoven's 'Eroica' symphony with the Warsaw Sinfonia.

Article Abstract:
It is wrong to treat composer Johann Sebastian Bach with excessive reverence, according to Dutch harpsichordist, organist, musicologist and conductor Ton Koopman. He is currently recording all Bach's cantatas and organ works for Warner Classics. It is important to recognize that Bach was an ordinary person who experienced the same emotions as everyone else. Bach experienced considerable misfortune in his personal life, but this is generally not reflected in his music.
