Vaclav Benda
Article Abstract:
Mathematician, philosopher and politician Vaclav Benda studied philosophy at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. During this time, he became head of the first independent students' association. He gained his doctorate in theoretical cybernetics in 1975, and then worked as a computer programmer. He was very closely involved with Charter 77, the dissidents' manifesto launched in 1977, and lost his job. He helped to found the Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted.

Article Abstract:
The Edgar Allan Poe International Festival in Prague, Czech Republic, will run until the end of Oct 1999. It aims to show Poe's influence on all aspects of culture, and includes lectures, plays, concerts and an exhibition of Poe memorabilia and works of art. The festival's artistic director is Scottish actor and director Clive Perrot, who is directing an 18-minute film of 'The Black Cat.'
