The reinvention of marriage
Article Abstract:
Mixed views are being expressed in France about government plans to introduce a Civil Solidarity Pact, a contract under which couples living together who do not wish to marry or are not usually eligible to do so will receive legal and fiscal recognition. Opponents of this measure believe that it will betray family values and that it could lead to the total disestablishment of the family. In fact, many ordinary French people have already gone beyond this stage, with their lifestyles being determined by education, economics and technology, rather than by morality.

Article Abstract:
French Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn has resigned following allegations that he was paid a 60,000 pounds sterling consultancy fee by a students' insurance organization for work he never undertook. He has denied the allegations, and has stated that he has resigned in order to be able to defend himself more effectively. His resignation is very damaging to Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, who has placed strong emphasis on moral probity.
