Varsity club prepares to repel all boarders
Article Abstract:
The UK Quality Assurance Agency is calling for stricter regulations relating to university status, ensuring that it is more difficult for colleges and institutes of higher education to obtain degree-awarding powers and gain the title 'university college.' It is also seeking a change in the law to permit university status and the power to award degrees to be taken away from universities where necessary. This development is a response to concern among many in the 'old' universities that the university system is expanding too rapidly.

Primary or university: which should get the extra cash?
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has emphasized the need to increase the number of young people entering higher education. This policy has been questioned by Chief Inspector of Schools Chris Woodhead, who fears that standards in higher education could drop if student numbers rise further. He believes that government funding should focus on primary education. This view is supported by the British Association of Early Childhood Education, which argues that primary education forms the basis for later educational and social development.

Learning is good for you
Article Abstract:
There has been a strong rise in the graduate population in the UK over recent years, especially as more 17- and 18-year-olds stay on at secondary school level and employment opportunities for young people diminish. Going to university has become extremely fashionable, and even older people are now becoming more interested in higher education. However, this does not mean that there are necessarily very good employment prospects for young graduates.
