Voters' apathy is big test for Blair
Article Abstract:
The popularity of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair will be reflected in the outcome of local authority elections to take place on May 6, 1999. The Labour party will inevitably suffer overall losses, as it performed well when most of the 13,000 seats being contested in 362 authorities were last fought in 1995. The party is preparing for the loss of around 1,200 seats, and believes that it may be negatively affected by claims of corruption and inefficiency in Labour-controlled local councils. The Conservative party must win 1,000 seats if discontent about William Hague's leadership is not to escalate.

Mayhem that lurks in the shadows
Article Abstract:
Many Conservatives and many people on the left wing of the Labour party assume that a Labour government with Tony Blair as prime minister would be bland, directionless and uninspiring. Tony Blair is certainly very popular, but does not appear to have a strong agenda for reform. However, there is so much pressure for real reform that a Labour government would not be in a position to do nothing.
