Water quality divides Britain
Article Abstract:
In 1997 there was a 21% improvement in the chemical quality of UK rivers compared to 1990, according to the Environment Agency, although the improvement had been 28% in 1995. The agency's report also reveals that river water quality tends to be worse in the South East. Here rivers have a lower oxygen content, due partly to the fact that they are warmer, have a weaker flow and have more algae than rivers in the North West. A lack of oxygen hampers wildlife. There is also concern about the expected rise in water demand in the South East due to plans to build more houses and rising temperatures.

Heads, you win
Article Abstract:
The reputations of both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell have frequently been adapted to align them with the purpose of the time or an individual. Their reputations are set to be reviewed once more as events are staged to mark the 350th anniversary of Charles I's execution and the 400th anniversary of Cromwell's birth. It is significant that an exhibition about Cromwell is being held at the Museum of London, as London was always strongly on the parliamentary side in the Civil War. It is clear that both men felt the need to present themselves as both royal and strong.
