Ways to beat the wee biting beasts
Article Abstract:
The Highland midge, Culicoides impunctatus, can cause significant problems for visitors to the west coast of Scotland. Midges avoid bright, dry or windy conditions, and are particularly prevalent at dawn and dusk. There are only two reasonably effective products licensed by the US Food and Drug Administration, but those using them should be aware that the strong chemicals can be absorbed through the skin. An alternative midge repellent is citronella, but this has the disadvantage of turning the skin yellow over time.

Pretty in pink, but a poisonous enemy
Article Abstract:
The rhododendron has become extremely firmly established in Snowdonia National Park, Wales. This plant looks very attractive, but is in fact causing serious problems. It grows very vigorously, and is able to regenerate from stumps and cuttings. Its leaves contain 30 neurotoxins, making it poisonous to almost all mammals, birds and insects, and it is choking native plants. It can take a great deal of time and money to make any impact on the area covered by rhododendron plants.

Crying wolf in Scotland
Article Abstract:
There is generally quite strong enthusiasm for reintroducing native species such as beavers, wolves and wild boar to the UK. However, individual reintroduction schemes have encountered considerable opposition. Some people feel that wolves, for example, represent a danger, while the ministry of agriculture, fisheries and food points out that wild boar can cause very serious damage to crops. There is more support for the reintroduction of beavers.
