We can help ourselves
Article Abstract:
The emphasis being placed on a return to a sense of 'community' by politicians from all parties in recent years has not really had any positive outcome yet. However, there are now some signs of changes, including the recent suggestion that parts of the welfare system could be managed by local authorities, which already control community care. The government seems to have finally realised that centralism has some disadvantages, particularly in the area of welfare provision, where it would be much easier to test new ideas on a local level.

We are all equal ... in fooling ourselves that we believe in equality
Article Abstract:
The belief that all people are equal has become an increasingly important element of British society over recent years. Indeed, those who deny equality for all run the risk of social isolation. However, it is clear that this belief does not really operate effectively in practice. People are valued through a range of mechanisms, and there is a growing gap between ordinary people and those who have been able to accumulate great wealth. The government seems to be very unwilling to take action to deal with this inequality.

A nation at ease with itself? We're getting there
Article Abstract:
There was a considerable rise in confidence among ordinary people in the UK in 1997. People continued to become more knowledgeable and wealthier, and there were significant developments in art and music. Unemployment declined, while wages rose and most people benefited from low-inflationary growth. Conditions are likely to be more difficult in 1998, but a soft economic landing is still more probable than a hard one. People are continuing to become richer in information, as well as in money and equipment.
