Article Abstract:
Some of those protesting against a planned second runway at Manchester Airport have tunnelled deep underground, creating a complex network of shafts and tunnels. They believe that this will allow them to hold out for six weeks against bailiffs who are trying to evict them. There are now seven camps, containing a total of around 100 protesters, at the site where the 3,050 mt runway, costing 172 million pounds sterling, is planned. The protesters have received considerable support from local residents, even though this is a wealthy area where environmental activists seem very out of place.

An inquest into the death of computer tycoon Christopher Dawes has heard that he died when his McLaren Formula 1 car crashed into a tree at high speed. His family believe that his death was not an accident, as he had spoken of people he believed wanted him dead. However, the coroner recorded his death and those of his personal assistant, Fiona Newman, and an architect, Michael Lamb, who were in the car with him, as accidental.
