A candle to the last peacemaker
Article Abstract:
There are serious divisions in Israeli society between right and left and between secular and religious. These differences has been clear as events have been held to mark the first anniversary of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. The religious and nationalist right has been responsible for many acts of violence since Rabin's death, and the security forces now fear that retaliation may be carried out by members of the secular left. Israeli politics has now reached a stalemate, with no government being strong enough to make peace or war.

Netanyahu's fall: From impregnable to reviled in just a few short weeks
Article Abstract:
It now seems very likely that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will lose the election on May 17, 1999, to Labour party leader Ehud Barak. Netanyahu appeared to have widespread support at the beginning of 1999, but has now been deserted by many of Israel's 1 million Russian Jewish immigrants. Many Israelis have also been alienated by Netanyahu's personal style and close connections with the ultra-orthodox. They regard him as lacking in honesty and integrity, betraying his friends if necessary.
