Wellcome Trust backs Glaxo bid

Article Abstract:

The board of Wellcome has given a cool response to a hostile takeover bid from fellow pharmaceutical company Glaxo. However, Glaxo has managed to gain conditional acceptance for the takeover from Wellcome Trust, which holds 39.5% of Wellcome. The deal will have to be approved by the Office of Fair Trading and the European Commission, but no difficulties are expected. However, there could be opposition to rationalisation plans, which could lead to extensive job losses at Wellcome.
