What is happening at Queen's College Belfast?
Article Abstract:
The academic council and Senate of Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, have decided that the institution will no longer teach Semitic studies, geology or Italian. Instead, it will move into new areas, including history of art and drama. It is planned that 107 academic staff, a tenth of the overall teaching workforce, will be shed. This scheme is designed to improve the institution's performance in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and therefore attract additional funds. Some observers believe that attempts to shed staff could lead to bitter conflict.

Double trouble for staff as student figures soar
Article Abstract:
The need to double mark student examinations and essays is placing a very great strain on the UK's universities. Double marking should be retained for post-graduate dissertations and possibly final-year undergraduate projects, but for other work could be replaced with a single-marker system supported by external examiners. This system would work in conjunction with a effective university appeal system to assess student complaints. Students should have a right to make an appeal or obtain a second opinion on marks.

It's time that we declared war on the class system
Article Abstract:
It is becoming clear that there are difficulties with the classification system used in higher education in the UK. Candidates are divided into a small number of degree classes in an apparently rather unstructured way, and the emergence of subdivided classes indicates that examiners feel that undifferentiated classes do not adequately reflect ranges of ability. It is now time to consider moving to a system in which results are published in the form of a single ranked list.
