When a new dad steps in
Article Abstract:
There has been a sharp rise in the UK in the number of extended families in which there is no blood link between immediate relatives. Couples who have children from previous relationships often have reservations about marrying again, as they feel that their children will be badly hurt if the new relationship encounters difficulties. However, in many cases children can greatly benefit from acquiring a new stepfamily, especially if they previously felt that they were different from their friends. Extended families can be very successful as long as the participants have the will to make them work.

If life is not enough
Article Abstract:
There were 632 suicides among men aged under 25 in the UK in 1995, with suicide levels in this population group having risen significantly since the mid-1980s. Jean Kerr, a founder of Papyrus, a support group for parents whose sons have committed suicide, believes that suicide among young men is largely the result of depressive illness prompted by the stresses of adolescence. Those who commit suicide are often very sensitive and caring people who feel that their family would be better off without them.

The dream of the ideal family is now a thing of the past
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Families Green Paper appears to indicate that the government is not willing to seek to reverse significant trends in family life, including a large rise in cohabitation and in the number of children born outside marriage. It is clear that the government realizes that it cannot really do anything to make marriage more popular. Instead, it is focusing on practical skills which will improve people's ability to deal with relationships and to be good parents.
