When a thistle becomes a thorn
Article Abstract:
Andrew Neil, the new editor-in-chief of The Scotsman, is likely to have a significant impact on the newspaper publishing scene in Scotland. He clearly plans to establish a radically different working regime at this newspaper, and will make his right-wing political agenda strongly felt. He will work to polarise the constitutional debate in Scotland, promoting separatism or the status quo as the only safe options. A right-wing shift at The Scotsman will give The Herald the opportunity to promote itself as left-leaning and achieve pan-Scottish sales.

A tobacco advertising ban, tougher consumer protection ... adland braces itself for a new government
Article Abstract:
The UK advertising industry believes that it will see significant changes under the new Labour government. There is particular concern about the Labour party's commitment to a ban on tobacco advertising. This is strongly opposed by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, which feels that there should not be a restriction on freedom of commercial speech. It is likely that a Labour government will take steps to develop the information superhighway. This will create new media outlets and will thus prompt further fragmentation of audiences.

Ulster TV's modest series may begin to change northerners' perception of the southern Irish
Article Abstract:
Ulster Television's (UTV) six-part documentary about life in the Irish Republic, entitled 'Crossing the Borders,' is very significant for what it reveals about UTV. This commercial television station has been traditionally regarded as extremely pro-Unionist, but is clearly trying to appeal to viewers in both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. It is making an effort to boost awareness among Protestants in Northern Ireland about life in the Irish Republic.
