Cheers!

Article Abstract:

It is likely that 1997 will be a very significant year for the development of the information superhighway in the UK and Europe. Around a third of Britons now own a personal computer, and this level is set to increase dramatically as new equipment which is much less expensive than a personal computer becomes available. The price of personal computers is likely to fall, and new types of people will begin to use them. There will also be significant developments in media and communications, especially in the light of developments such as the launch of a CD-Rom which can contain whole organisms.

So who cares if the sky is falling?

Article Abstract:

It would be a very valuable exercise to undertake detailed research into the few thousand asteroids in Earth-crossing orbits which have the potential to cause extensive devastation if they were to collide with the Earth, according to David Morrison, director of space at Nasa's Ames Research Center. This would not require unfeasible investment, and would be relatively easy to organise. However, there is very little interest in undertaking such work, even among the scientific community.

The answer to life and the universe? Well, that depends on the question

Article Abstract:

Some very interesting questions about science and human life have been raised by contributors to Edge, a world wide web site run by literary agent and writer John Brockman. Steven Pinker, for example, has asked how the brain represents the meaning of a sentence, while William Calvin, a theoretical neurophysiologist, has asked how minds will expand, once people understand how the brain makes mind. Many questions focus on seeking a more long term approach to the world and its resources.
