When the scientist plays the Devil
Article Abstract:
Monster figures which link humans with another species in some way have appeared frequently in art and literature and have fascinated mankind since its very origins. Genetic manipulation of this kind is now within the grasp of scientists, giving the 'monster myth' an alarming new dimension. Artists have lost the respect of ordinary people, while scientists have become all-powerful, their work portrayed by the media as being beyond the understanding of the majority of people.

Woodpecker, spare that spire
Article Abstract:
The Maramure region, situated on the Romania-Ukraine border, still retains a medieval rural way of life. There are few lorries, machines or other manifestations to damage its 200 surviving 17th and 18th century wooden churches, but they are now being attacked by woodpeckers, which seem to be particularly attracted to old churches. Problems are also being caused by a population explosion in the area, with people being attracted to the relatively prosperous local economy.

Spare us the moral scientist
Article Abstract:
Lewis Wolpert, Professor of Biology as Applied to Medicine at University College, London, believes that scientists should make known the implications and reliability of their knowledge. The responsibility for acting on the knowledge lies with the politicians representing the people. Eugenics was based on a false premise when it was used for social management. Scientific method is limited when applied to complex systems such as climate and human behaviour.
