When there is nowhere else to go
Article Abstract:
The UK government's community care policy has allowed many mentally ill people to escape from dehumanising institutions. However, they often find that there are no facilities in the community to help them if their illness returns. In times of crisis, they often return to their former psychiatric hospital in search of assistance, but the system is too inflexible to allow them to be admitted for a short time until they become able to cope alone again.

Are we sitting too comfortably?
Article Abstract:
The percentage of obese people in the UK has doubled since 1980, according to a recent government report, and this trend is set to continue. More and more people are eating too many high fat foods, while most take too little exercise. In turn, levels of diseases such as diabetes, cancer and arthritis are rising. Some observers believe that government ministers are unwilling to issue specific advice about healthy lifestyle regimes.

A shadowy killer makes a comeback
Article Abstract:
Tuberculosis had been in decline for many years, but a growing number of cases are now being reported in both developed and developing countries. Western countries are now having to re-establish tuberculosis services which were dismantled in the 1980s. In the UK, 5,700 cases were reported in 1994, and active tuberculosis can infect 10-15 people a year if left untreated.
