'When we are gone, the world must never forget.' (50th anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz death camp)
Article Abstract:
Ceremonies have been held recently to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of 7,000 people from the Auschwitz death camp, where 1.5 million people were killed by the Nazis. The ceremonies, which took place across Poland, were generally ecumenical in nature, which attracted criticism from Jewish groups, who believe that more emphasis should have been placed on the fact that Jews accounted for the vast majority of the victims. Senior leaders from many countries attended, and later signed an appeal against racism, fanaticism and anti-Semitism.

Half a century on, Poland's Jews still suffer at Auschwitz
Article Abstract:
Only a very small number of Jews survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, which carried out killings on a massive scale. It is thought that around 1.1 million Jews were sent there, with most coming from Poland and Hungary. There has always been controversy surrounding the legacy of the camp, and recently there have been clashes over plans for the 50th anniversary of the liberation. Many Jewish survivors believe that the plans do not fully reflect the scale of the Jewish suffering.

'God, have no mercy on them.' (Auschwitz survivors return after 50 years)
Article Abstract:
Many survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp returned there recently to mark the 50th anniversary of its liberation. They went to pay homage to those who were murdered there and to testify to the terrible crimes which took place there. The ceremony was arranged by Jews for Jews, and was therefore preferred by some survivors to the official commemorations organised by the Polish authorities, which they believe do not pay enough attention to the suffering of the Jews.
