Where are the female surgeons?
Article Abstract:
Women have accounted for almost half of medical graduates in the UK since the early 1980s, but few choose to take up a career in surgery. Indeed, less than one in five consultants is female. Women medical graduates are partly deterred from taking up a career in surgery by the very macho image with which surgery is associated. Female surgeons report that they are often treated as being inferior to their male colleagues. They also resent the fact that their competency is questioned if they return to work after having taken time off to have children.

Tudors go to our heads
Article Abstract:
The Tudor era continues to attract considerable interest in certain political, social and business circles in the UK. This has been highlighted in the three-part Channel 4 series on the life of Henry VIII. Other manifestations of modern fascination with the Tudors can be found in a new work by Peter Ackroyd exploring the rise and decline of Thomas More and in a book on the lives of Henry VII's sisters by Maria Perry. The Channel 4 series shows how Henry VIII gained truly mythic status.
