Rita Atria committed suicide after the murder of Paolo Borsellino, the judge who was protecting her from the Mafia after she informed on them. Her father and brother were killed by the Mafia in Partanna. When she was 18 she talked to the police, breaking the unwritten rule of the Mafia. Her statement led to the imprisonment of 30 people. She was thrown out by her mother and police guarded her in a 7th floor flat on the edge of Rome. Others who testified against Mafia killers suffered reprisals, losing their livelihoods.

'I really want to keep this baby.' (Salvation Army mother and baby home, Newhaven)

Article Abstract:

The Salvation Army has a mother and baby hostel in Newhaven, Sussex where 20-30 women are trained in mothering. Social workers supervise mothers who must prove they can care for their babies, otherwise they are put into care. Some are from children's homes, victims of abuse, thrown out of their homes, or have a record of child abuse or neglect. Women remain for up to a year, with structured days. Staff discuss moral concerns but religion is not compulsory.

Article Abstract:

Soviet Jewish immigration to Israel is reducing as the immigrants find housing problems, unemployment and anti Soviet sentiment. It is estimated that 350,000 Soviet Jews have arrived in Israel since restrictions were lifted in 1989 but already 1,500 are applying to return to Russia either temporarily or permanently. Immigrants are settled in areas political importance to Israel in the Negev Desert and Golan Heights.
