Whitbread divides its operations into seven business units. Whitbread Beer Company, UK's fourth biggest brewer, handles brewing and associated sales and distribution of beers through various licensing agreements. Whitbread Inns, the group's biggest contributor in terms of operating profits, oversees public house estate of about 1,700 outlets. Whitbread Pub Partnerships runs the group's estate of leased pubs numbering around 1,700 properties. The group's three-star hotels and the budget Travel Inn chain are under Whitbread Hotels, while David Lloyd Leisure manages sports, health and fitness centers. Other Drinks manages the First Quench off-license venture and Whitbread's minority stake of Britvic.

Whitbread is presented with various growth opportunities, with interests ranging from leisure to sports clubs, hotels, coffee shops and restaurants. Its strong presence in such markets, in addition to those in food-oriented and branded pubs, are expected to further lift the group's operating profits. In the short-term, Whitbread is in a status to achieve future developments in leisure activities and leisure spending. These growth prospects come after Whitbread suffered several setbacks, including the failed acquisition of the pub estate of Allied Domecq.

Whitbread, a major UK leisure firm with stakes in brewing, off-licenses, health clubs, hotels, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs, is one of the top businesses in the UK. It employs more than 85,000 people and has net assets of 2.5 billion pounds sterling. Established by the first Samuel Whitbread in 1742, the company has remained focused on closely linked businesses, such as pubs and brewing. Whitbread confines its overseas exposure on some beer sales to export markets and a restaurant business in Germany.
