Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is one of a number of British cities competing for the title of European Capital of Culture. Glasgow was awarded this title in 1990, and a British city can win the title in 2008. Manchester. Liverpool and Bradford are among the rivals to Newcastle. Glasgow benefited from the title over the long term, and invested a great deal in cultural activities and facilities. Liverpool argues that it offers more galleries and museums than other British cities, except for London.
