Who do these guys think they are?
Article Abstract:
The UK's judges are now increasingly critical of the government, but this does not mean that they are representing the views of ordinary people. Indeed, the vast majority of them have a background which is far removed from that of ordinary people. They earn a great deal of money, live in very expensive houses and were largely privately educated. Some observers claim that high class judges are necessary, as they will be confident in dealing with their equals. However, their inexperience of ordinary life can hamper them in making ration judgements.

A statesmanlike way to boost sales
Article Abstract:
Recent developments in the UK Labour party have worked to the benefit of New Statesman magazine, which claims to be the forum in which the party defines itself in print. Circulation is now at 23,000 copies a week, having risen by 26% since Apr 1996, and the magazine hopes to double its circulation with two-three years. However, it will only be able to do so if it can position itself correctly among Labour party supporters and if it continues to be backed by millionaire owner Geoffrey Robinson.

Ending a cultural contradiction
Article Abstract:
The British Academy and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) produced the Follett committee report which recommends a separate Humanities Research Council comparable to the science research councils. Alternatively, it suggests a combined humanities and social sciences body. Minister for Public Services and Science William Waldegrave controls science funds but humanities come under the Department for Education. The British Academy could be reformed advantageously.
