Why Britain's farmers are making a loss on nearly everything they grow
Article Abstract:
British farmers face both local and global factors which have led to losses on a wide range of activities due to prices having dropped to below production costs. Milk, beef, eggs, fruit and vegetables are among the products affected. Livestock farmers have been worst affected, and farmers are starting to dump animals that no longer have a value. Farmers have to pay to take animals to be slaughtered. The Russian market has contracted as a result of that country's economic crisis, and ewes too old to produce more lambs used to be exported to Russia.
