Why Islam's law bewilders the West
Article Abstract:
There is very little interest in the west in the Sharia, the Muslim code of law, except when a high profile case emerges. This has happened recently with Debbie Parry and Lucille McLauchlan, British nurses who have been charged in Saudi Arabia with the murder of Yvonne Gilford, an Australian colleague. In the Sharia, murder is a personal crime, with the state being obliged to respect the wishes of the victim's family about whether retribution should be sought or not. Western media coverage tends to focus on executions for murder which are undertaken in Saudi Arabia, overlooking the fact that many murderers are actually pardoned by the families of the victims.

Islam's grip tightens as Malaysia's boom ends
Article Abstract:
There is considerable controversy in Malaysia about the extent to which religion should dictate the country's laws. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is keen for Islam to operate in tandem with flexible business values, but this has become increasingly difficult recently. In particular, economic downturn has allowed Muslim clergy to become increasingly influential. They believe that the government's approach is causing Malays to abandon their faith, and point to a number of signs of decadence, such as bars selling alcohol.

I've spent my life trying to repair the image of Islam. Has it all been in vain?
Article Abstract:
The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon have been a significant blow to the image of Islam, being immediately attributed to Muslim fundamentalists. It is important to remember that the actions of those responsible had no connections with Islamic theology.
