Why don't students want to become teachers?
Article Abstract:
Prospective students in the UK appear to regard a career in teaching quite positively. However, applications from graduates for teacher training courses have fallen to extremely low levels. Indeed, there have been no applications at all for courses beginning in Oct 1998 for secondary school teaching of Russian, Italian, social studies, economics or classics. The Teacher Training Agency is attempting to address the recruitment crisis in a number of different ways, including television advertising and recruiting older people.

Staff shortages, a secondary concern
Article Abstract:
There has been a sharp fall in the number of applicants for initial teacher training courses in the UK. There is a particular shortfall in applications at the postgraduate PGCE level for secondary school specialists. The Teacher Training Agency is addressing this problem through an extensive advertising campaign, but is facing significant challenges. The image of teaching remains poor, and graduates are unwilling to train to teach when many jobs are available in other areas.
