Why inflict pointless wounds on Ulster's Protestants?
Article Abstract:
Chris Patten's report on the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) was drawn up in the best of faith, but in fact needlessly damages the Ulster Protestant community and morale within the RUC. Furthermore, this report can be seen as giving loyalist and republican paramilitaries confidence that they will be able to infiltrate and corrupt the RUC. The most negative aspect of the report is that it is based on the aim of creating a police force acceptable to the entire community in Northern Ireland. Implementing the most controversial recommendations would allow parts of Northern Ireland to fall into the hands of republican and loyalist fascists.
