The UK Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund provides the MAC Help Line to advise teenagers with cancer. Matthew Martin, 17, has had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia since he was 10, but has qualified as a football referee, won trophies for football and passed eight GCSEs. He is to have a bone marrow transplant. Southampton General Hospital, England, provides psychosocial care specifically for teenagers with cancer, 50-60% of whom survive. The Middlesex Hospital, London, England, had the first teenage cancer unit. Cancer affects about one in 2,000 teenagers.

Staff working in hospital casualty departments have to be prepared to deal with many different sorts of cases. They are under a great deal of pressure, especially as patients often become distressed when they have to wait for a long time. They feel that they have no time to talk properly to patients, and that they must operate in a very mechanical way.
