Thank goodness for middle-class angst over jobs
Article Abstract:
The UK government is forecasting that many new jobs will be created in 1997 as the economy continues to expand. However, many observers are still concerned about the state of the UK's labour market, believing that many of the new jobs created will be only temporary. There is particular concern among the middle classes, even though rising employment will in fact be of most benefit to well-educated professional people. The real job insecurity is to be found among people in unskilled employment, where temporary work is now very common.

My brief encounters of a lasting kind on road to the House
Article Abstract:
Prospective MPs in the UK must campaign extremely hard in the run-up to a general election, even if they are fighting a seat in which the party they represent has a large majority. They must meet many strangers, and must take care always to be seen to take great interest in people's views. In many cases, they must deal with people who are extremely cynical about politicians from all parties. They frequently encounter people who want to talk to them in detail about their life story.
