Why students should pay fair
Article Abstract:
The Labour party has made a brave move in putting forward plans for a new approach to the funding of higher education, as this is an extremely sensitive issue. The party accepts that the funding of higher education fees should remain the responsibility of the taxpayer, but has suggested that students should take out a loan repayable over 20 years to meet their living costs. This approach represents a move in the right direction, but a better system would be a graduate tax. This could be paid through the National Insurance system and would not necessarily be difficult to administer.

Freelances play key role in shaping brave new world
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common in the UK for very skilled professional people to become freelances, often selling their services to their former employer. This offers certain advantages for employers, who no longer have to fund National Insurance contributions and the overheads associated with permanent employees. However, freelance employment does not benefit the labour market as a whole, as most freelance workers do not employ others. Freelancing may be successful for older people, who have gained skills over years spent with a permanent employer, but not for younger people.

Karl Marx comes back - in an anorak
Article Abstract:
Many of the views of Karl Marx have now become discredited. However, his theory of the classless society is now being taken up by both John Major and Tony Blair. Furthermore, the strongly historical view which Marx had about what instigates changes in the class structure is also being seen a number of modern contexts. In today's society, barriers between classes could be destroyed by economic and technological changes which are being brought about by the information revolution.
