Why Branson is suddenly getting a poor press
Article Abstract:
It is difficult to ascertain why entrepreneur Richard Branson has begun to receive negative publicity. It is possible that his Virgin business empire really is in difficulty, or that he has simply fallen victim to his extensive use of publicity. None of his business ventures except Virgin Atlantic is currently making money, but this is not surprising, given that they are still in their early stages. Branson uses offshore holding companies to disguise his financial arrangements, but this is not at all uncommon. The negative publicity could be emanating from rivals trying to dislodge him.

Out of jail and back in business
Article Abstract:
Ernest Saunders, former chief executive of Guinness, was convicted of fraud and sentenced to five years in prison. However, he served only 10 months, as medical experts were able to convince the court that he was suffering from pre-senile dementia. He was certainly guilty of the crime for which he was convicted, and has become closely associated with controversy and fraud. Despite this, he now seems to be making new inroads into business life in the UK, and is heading a consortium bid for Queen's Park Rangers football club.

Why the buy-back fashion is bad for Britain
Article Abstract:
A considerable number of UK companies have recently returned funds to shareholders in the form of share buy-backs, special dividends and similar schemes. This trend is partly responsible for the current buoyancy in the stock market. Some observers feel that it is not a positive development, as it may prompt the government to take action to abolish the tax breaks which such schemes currently attract. It may also be a sign that these companies are under-investing for the future.
